This original artwork is a part of Tracing Change, a group exhibition showcasing the work of artists from the Modern Times community and beyond. Tracing Change invites both artists and audience to trace back through thoughts and experiences, and experience a gratitude or curiosity for the ability to grow, transmute and transform.

“This work is an insider joke (to myself) of how my family’s country Colombia is misspelled by institutions, mistakenly using the British spelling, which is ironic considering the subject matter of my work, which often involves a critique of British colonisation. This work references obscuring of identity for protection to protest; the colourful balaclava is a way to protest without showing aggression," says Searle.

About the Artist

Joshua Searle

A self-taught artist, Joshua Searle’s themes relate to childhood, Black genius, joy, colonisation, urbanisation, cross-cultural experiences, industrialisation and psychology. Born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula, much of his work explores the inner workings of the mind, memory and childhood experience.

Primarily a painter, using a variety of mediums including acrylic, oil stick, oil pastel, pencil, enamel and spray paint. His work involves an environmental practice of painting on and with found materials, as well as large canvases. His initial explorations of painting were largely sparked by the inspiration of Haitian-Puerto Rican-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. A particular influence has been Basquiat’s use of colour, cryptic text, challenging contextual aspects, and often immense scale of his works.

Searle explores the diasporic position in contemporary societies founded upon migration and displacement in America and Australia. Searle simultaneously questions confronting issues whilst celebrating Black excellence and the triumphs as well as the struggles found within being a man of colour.

Do you offer click and collect?

Yes! Please select the option when checking out for pick up from our store on 311 Smith Street, Wurundjeri, Fitzroy. For larger items that require a vehicle, this entrance is the only access to our store. Unfortunately, we cannot offer assistance to your vehicle so please collect your items with this in mind.
