Blue Lotus, Stoneware 2023

$281.00

This original artwork is a part of Tracing Change, a group exhibition showcasing the work of artists from the Modern Times community and beyond. Tracing Change invites both artists and audience to trace back through thoughts and experiences, and experience a gratitude or curiosity for the ability to grow, transmute and transform.

Georgina Yen Qin Lee's vessels intricately weave narratives of shame and reverence, tracing the change of cultural erosion as a result of assimilation into Western society. The forms begin as perfectly shaped vessels that pay homage to traditional Chinese vases, and then manipulated and vandalised.

“The series is an exploration of the complexities of cultural identity—a journey into tradition, adaptation, and self-discovery, inviting contemplation of creation, reclamation, and the changing tides of cultural preservation," says Lee.

About the Artist

Yen Qin

'Yen Qin' is the ceramic practice of Georgina Yen Qin Lee, an Australian-born Chinese Malaysian visual artist based in Naarm. Lee uses the medium of ceramics as a conduit to reconnect with her Southern Chinese and South East Asian ancestral roots while exploring her lived experience growing up in Australia. Combining wheel thrown, hand manipulated forms with complex surface treatments, her works navigate themes of cultural shame and reverence whilst trying to make sense of the ‘third cultural space’ in which she occupies.

Lee holds postgraduate degrees in Visual Art at the VCA and Art History at the University of Melbourne. She developed her ceramic practice at the School of Clay and Art with Neville French.
