Furniture
Is your furniture new or used?
A bit of both!
Our vintage design furniture is sourced from across Europe – such as Italy, The Netherlands, Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. All of our highly collectable pieces are hand-selected on our annual buying trips, where we tirelessly seek out the most unique pieces for Modern Times, which are then restored by our expert team.
We also have a range of contemporary design by both emerging and established Australian designers that can be made to order.
What are the characteristics of your vintage furniture?
Our furniture is made from a variety of materials, including solid and veneered timbers such as teak, rosewood, beech and oak. You’ll also find pieces in leather, marble and different metals. It’s common to find a piece of furniture made from a combination of timber types – for example, a sideboard may have a veneer face with solid legs, handles and edging. Veneer is a thin sliver of hardwood timber cut along the grain. Scandinavian pieces often feature a book-matched grain pattern, which is only possible with specially selected timber veneers. The result is a crown or ‘cathedral’ figure visible across the surface of a piece. This attention to detail often signifies high value and beauty.
Do you offer furniture restoration for pieces you don't sell?
Unfortunately, we don't have the capacity to offer restoration services on pieces that aren't sold through Modern Times. However, we're more than happy to recommend some options for your needs.
Do you have any other furniture available that isn't already in your showroom?
We do not hold all of our vintage furniture in our showroom on Smith Street and our warehouse is not available to the public. If you wish to view a particular item, please contact the team and we will arrange to have it transferred to the showroom.
Can I visit your warehouse?
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer public access to our warehouse. If you are after a particular piece of furniture, please contact the team and we can advise whether it's available. If so, we can then arrange for it to be transferred to our showroom for a viewing.
Do you purchase furniture from the public?
Thank you so much for thinking of us! Unfortunately, we only have the capacity to source furniture from our credited dealers in Europe but we are more than happy to pass on some recommendations.
What kind of reupholstery options do you offer?
Great question! We have several repeat furniture pieces that are reupholstered to order with your choice of fabric - this includes the Halabala, Maralunga, Arielle and Cleopatra daybeds.
However, if you spy an item in our store that is already upholstered but you can envision at home in a different colour or fabric, please contact the team and we can discuss options to organise a custom quote if possible.
