Jennifer Tarry-Smith is a Melbourne based artist working in the medium of printmaking and drawing. She produces works that are abstract distillations of her experience of place and memory.
Her pieces are not intended to be an actual, visual depiction of any particular location in time, but rather the culmination of impressions formed by the senses whilst there. The quality of light; the depth of shadow; the shapes and lines; textures; patina; and the smells and fragments of sound that form our impressions and constitute our memories of a location are what she attempts to capture and represent in her work.
Like the familiar places within memory, the imagery is redrawn many times in a process of refining until the final image is only a fragment reminiscent of the initial drawing. This continuous reworking and simplification captures the essence of the sensory experience of place.
