We’re thrilled to invite you into the gallery for our final exhibition of the year – our big summer group show – Tracing Change. Showcasing the works of over 50 Australian artists from the Modern Times community and beyond.

We invited the artists to look back on the year and consider personal shifts - big or small – and via mindful and practical contemplation interrogate points of transformation or foster new perspectives. The resulting works experiment in zones of discomfort and explore unconventional materials, techniques or subject matter.

Whilst navigating life in turbulence, Charlotte Swiden used her practice to guide her through.

"Usually I paint on large canvases, so I got some small wooden panels and undercoated them fiery red. The smaller format felt less precious, and the harder surface gave me different feedback, making my strokes a little wilder. In life's chaos, interesting things happen, and painting will always be my buoy.”
says Swiden.

Wandering and contemplating on her travels abroad, Hilary Green found symbolism within ordinary objects, discovering shapes from within, demonstrated in her magnificent spiralised sculpture.

"The spiral was a lesson learned. Transformation is continuous and I consider there to be no end, only the sweetness of constant change."
says Green.

Tracing Change invites both artists and audience to trace back through thoughts and experiences, and experience a gratitude or curiosity for the ability to grow, transmute and transform.

Key themes of loose expressionism and bold colour have emerged – pops of yellow, and accents of blues emerge intuitively, hinting towards simultaneous notes of positivity and solemnity.

Over 70 works will fill the gallery space, showcasing a diverse range of practices and mediums from the likes of painters Kayleigh Heydon, Stacey Rees, Ria Green to ceramicists Ella Bendrups, Kerryn Levy, Samanatha McIntyre (The Soda Fountain) and more.

We’d love you to join us in the gallery 16 November from 6-8pm to celebrate the opening night of Tracing Change. We look forward to welcoming you into the showroom for our final exhibition of the year.
