Modern Times is delighted to present Memory Palace, an exhibition presented as part of Craft Contemporary 2023, an annual festival delivered by Craft Victoria.
Memory Palace brings together painter Carissa Karamarko with ceramicist Tessy King in an exhibition that translates significant periods in their lives – King’s experiences of early motherhood, and Karamarko establishing Melbourne as her new home.
King layers her textural hand built vessels with markings taken from her toddler’s early scribblings, distorting them with her own material play – scratching, drawing and painting with layers of underglaze, glaze, lustres and vitreous enamels. The somatic experience of gestural movement is layered onto the clay surface creating shapes that are formulated by where the hand goes before the mind arrives.
Karamarko paints still-lifes embellished with sculptural details, drawing from her extensive photographic documentation of her life, each work representing a place, a meal, a memory that has shaped her sense of home in Melbourne.
Memory Palace is a dialogue between painter and ceramicist representing domestic and everyday experiences in layered and gestural works that both abstract and honour the content. Join us for the opening event on Thursday 12 October from 6 to 8pm.
This event is part of Craft Contemporary (1–31 October), an annual festival delivered by Craft Victoria – the largest celebration of craft and design in Victoria. The festival brings together practitioners, educators, industry, and craft lovers to explore material practice as it is today. See, touch, experience and be inspired by 150+ art experiences, including exhibitions, talks, demonstrations, workshops and open studios.
