Ate Van Apledoorn’s approach to timber was built on an understanding and respect for the material at hand. He began designing timber pieces for Dutch manufacturer Houtwerk Hattem in 1958 where he employed a tree-to-product process with wooden bowls and beads. This same process heavily informed his later work with pine, where the strong natural grain and decorative yet functional finger joints are defining features, and decorative elements are disregarded.
