Armchair in the Style of Josef Hoffman by Ernst W Beranek, 1980s, Germany
1 in stock
This great armchair references some great design minds of the 19th and 20th Centuries: Michael Thonet, Josef Hoffman and Otto Wagner, all linked to eras spanning Bentwood to Bauhaus. It was designed by Ernst W Beranek in Germany in the 1980s as an homage to the work of Michael Thonet - note the special gold stamp reading ‘Michael Thonet 1796-1871’. There are many stylistic influences to note here - all which come together in one powerful and grand design. You can see a hint of Josef Hoffman in the perforated back and seat, the square arms and the geometric armrests referencing the tubular design strongly linked to Bentwood. Similarly, the metal-capped feet are a nod to Otto Wagner. It’s like a miniature lesson in design history! Place this piece at the head of the table paired with black timber bentwood chairs, or use as an occasional chair on its own.
