“The Nine Months series are a continuation of the Domestic Talisman body of work, the latest forms developed as a response to the experience of my current pregnancy. The roundness of the forms reflect changes in my own body and the stacked sculptures were designed to represent a trio of guardians, one to look out for my partner, one for me and one for the baby,” says Bendrups.

This original sculpture is part of a follow up series to her 2021 Artist in Focus series ‘Domestic Talisman’ which traced Bendrups’ ongoing exploration of ancient clay and stone artefacts and their ability to transcend the times and cultures in which they were created.

The work is handbuilt using a combination of coiling and slab building techniques with hand hammered surface texture.

About the Artist:

Ella Bendrups is a Naarm (Melbourne) based emerging ceramic artist who creates innate forms refined for a modern context. Bendrups’ practice explores ancient clay and stone artefacts and their ability to transcend the times and cultures in which they were created. She embraces the expressive nature of hand building, pinching, coiling and carving clay to highlight the maker’s touch.
