About the work:
Charcoal Tower in Mid Fire Ceramic and Dollops of Lustre by Kirsten Perry.
This piece was created in response to Modern Times’s exhibition re:coquo for Melbourne Design Week 2021. Expanding on the broader Design Week theme of ‘Design the world you want’, re:coquo participants were invited to examine existing work, material or unresolved ideas and revisit the broken, forgotten or discarded with the aim of creating something anew.
“The textural white piece was sitting in my studio for some time, but I knew it would fit with another piece eventually. Once left to stand higher on another textural stand, I saw how it must be. I had originally made another piece to go with it but having just recently finished the black piece I saw that the pair were meant to be. I cannot fully ‘design the world I want’ but I can move in a direction that I’m happy with, one that allows for chance and serendipity,” says Perry.
