About the work:
Coral Blue Vessel, Ceramic Sculpture by Irene Grishin-Selzer.
This vessel is part of Irene Grishin-Selzer’s 2021 Artist in Focus series which explores the depths of light and shade, as well as select use of colour which is highlighted by the bold textures which characterise her practice.
For Grishin-Selzer, nature is not simply a form of inspiration – it feeds her practice in a multitude of palpable ways. Witnessing the cycles within nature is a considerable influence; her clay paintings illustrate her interpretation of this process of regeneration, mapped out through abstract cross-sections and areas of exploration across the surface of the works.
“Incorporating soil into my work from where my family and I live is one tangible way to connect to abstract concepts like exploring a sense of place and the shape of time,” she says.
About the Artist:
Irene Grishin-Selzer is an Australian artist, based in Melbourne, who works predominantly with ceramics. Through her work, she engages with the notion of transience in nature, the shape of time and the sense of place. Her practice takes two separate, but interconnected forms. The first is the clay paintings and clay drawings, the second is object-based pieces.
