About the work:
Australian Shell Vessel by Madeleine Thornton-Smith.
This piece is part of Talismans, Rafts, Mementos: a group exhibition showcasing the work of the entire community of Modern Times artists. Throughout 2020 artists used their practice to make sense of what was happening, and this show celebrates this rich vein of creative output.
“The process of casting cannot be separated from memory: mould making casts a moment in time, creating an index of that object, like a film photograph. Mementos of a world in flux,” says Madeleine.
About the Artist:
Madeleine Thornton-Smith is a Melbourne based artist with training in painting and ceramics. Her work questions where distinct mediums end and others begin; she has a particular interest in challenging the archetypes of the vessel, frame, plinth and canvas, interrogating material hierarchies and raising questions about the status and value of ceramics, art and craft.
