Coen De Vries

Coen De Vries (The Hague, 1918) was one of the first Dutch interior architects to sell and produce their own designs. He began in 1947 with his shop “De Sleutel” (The Key) in Amsterdam along with J.Jonker where he also sold designs by others.

As part of the ‘Goed Wonen’ (good living) foundation, his goal was to create good, practical, modern and aesthetically pleasing furniture at an affordable price (a concept not indifferent to IKEA). No plush was at ‘The Key’ but furniture in lightwood, with simple construction and fabrics in bright colours.

He designed for various plants including Devo, Pilastro, Eeka (Germany) and Gispen.
