Artifort

Founded by upholsterer Jules Wagemans in 1890 and rebranded as Artifort in 1928, this renowned Dutch manufacturer quickly built an international reputation—first for its innovative use of Epeda interior springing, and later for the collaborations undertaken by design director Kho Liang Ie. In 1959, Kho Liang Ie recruited the French designer Pierre Paulin, who developed the striking, brightly coloured seating sculptures that now define Artifort’s collection. In 1967 Paulin met fabric designer Jack Lenor Larsen, forming what would become an iconic partnership. Epitomising their innovative approach to form, materials and textiles, Paulin and Larsen’s Ribbon lounge chair became an icon of modern design, and is still produced by Artifort today.
