Thomas Thorby-Lister’s work plays with our perceptive ideologies around surface, space and time. Using alternative ways of recording place and describing the physical environment, he translates this data into image-based works. Thorby-Lister’s habits of making centre around process, utilising various materials to describe and depict the inaccurate or flawed ways information is translated. Subject matter is equally as broad and indirect, with paintings translating landscapes, everyday surfaces, objects, body, place and time.
Thorby-Lister has been a finalist in over fifteen art prizes and awards, including the Glover Prize 2021, Blacktown City Art Award 2021, Lethbridge Art Awards 2019/20, Redlands Art Award 2018 and the EMSLA Art Prize 2018. His work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions at various galleries across Australia. Thorby-Lister has been awarded several residencies and grants, including working with Corridor Projects (Cowra) in support of Create NSW and Regional Arts Funding, which led in being invited to exhibit at Orange Regional Gallery in 2022.
