Traditionally in ceramics, skill and control are embraced to achieve desired outcomes, so, what does it mean to embrace chaos? Deviating from traditional processes, Annie Parnell arranges thick glaze with hand-built clay components to provoke chance-based material interactions during firing. The resulting artefacts embody Jane Bennett’s concept of “vital materiality” and form part of Annie’s development of a queer-feminist visual language in ceramics.
Annie Parnell is an emerging artist based in Kambri/Canberra. She completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) at the ANU School of Art and Design in 2021. Her first solo show was at Strathnairn Arts in 2021 and her work has been included in several local group shows, as well as in Talente 2021: International Craft Exhibition Prize (Munich). Parnell’s work is held in a number of private collections locally and internationally.
