About the work:

What A Drag It Is To See You, Original Photograph by Em Jensen.

This piece is part of Radiant Dreams, a group exhibition showcasing the work of more than 50 artists from the Modern Times community. Radiant Dreams invited our artists to unleash their most vibrant work, embracing colour, movement and verve. The resulting works are a buoyant collection reflecting optimism, energy and hope as we emerge from the monotonous routine of lockdown.

“I found myself looking back at this work numerous times throughout lockdown; it perfectly encapsulates everything I missed the most from pre-lockdown life. The incredible, colourful creatives within the Melbourne art scene, the freedom of escaping to the country whenever I desired and the feeling of connection that was simply impossible to while stuck in isolation. The irony is that despite these images seeming like a distant, beautiful dream to me whilst existing in this uncomfortable, hazy reality, the subjects look as though they’re dreaming of another time and place too. In this way, the work reinvented itself into a statement about living in the present and remaining optimistic despite the circumstance you’re faced with, even when the circumstance is a global pandemic,” Jensen says.

About the Artist:

Em Jensen is based in Melbourne, although she’s often on a road trip in the outback. She is self-taught and photographs exclusively on film and super 8 mediums. Jensen’s work explores themes of nostalgia, youth, the Australian character, and documenting the many under-represented sub-cultures of Melbourne.
