For Studio Henry Wilson, the Fair marks the launch of the opulent Offset Lamp - a truly special testament to the integrity of his work. The lamp features his signature combination of rational, democratic utility with striking sculptural expression. Wilson’s ideas are based on simpler forms of sustainability; his design is an evolutionary process of refining, learning and improving to build well-made structures that last.
Nicole Lawrence, industrial designer and fabricator, is taking the stage with an elemental reimagining of her renowned Smooth Coffee Table design, alongside a special edition of her Floating Shelf design, crafted from anodised aluminium in memorable colours. Note her signature practice of heroing curves and soft line, combined with a pragmatic approach to form and function.
Using an experimental construction method to produce sculptures made solely from a porcelain piping technique – a method usually reserved for the cake decorating – Ebony Russell has perfected her process with her decadent creations, exhibiting forms that seemingly defy their own making.
Most recently, Russell was commissioned to do a work by the Powerhouse Museum, part of a year-long exhibition about ceramics. Her work focuses on notions of nostalgia and desire imbued in collected objects and has become a noteworthy rising star of ceramics.
Designer Zachary Frankel presents the Crinkle Lamp which unbelievably, was his first attempt at lighting. The result? A unique and thoughtfully-designed piece with each component produced by hand. His work largely carries strong geometric volumes often referencing historical styles, but are undeniably contemporary.
Frankel’s furniture series began with an open exploration of form and material. Through a process of play and experimentation, he pursues new ideas without a commercial imperative but instead is guided by intuition and dedication to sculptural form and function.
The event will be the first of its kind in Australia to highlight contemporary collectable design and break new ground in the presentation, promotion and sale of collectable contemporary design in Australia. The unrivalled opportunity to explore the creativity of Australian designers whose functional objects delight, challenge and inspire us to think differently about the rituals of everyday life and the ideas, materials and making they employ.
You’ll find Modern Times within the PRESENTS platform, alongside a select group of esteemed commercial galleries, design organisations, agencies and studios from across the country.
This event is part of Melbourne Design Week 2022, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.
